Head of Retail – Origin Coffee London based

Origin is one of the leading and most progressive speciality coffee roasters in the UK. Seasonality, provenance and traceability are at the heart of our supply chain. Our core business is wholesale supply for independent cafes across the UK and Europe. We own and operate six coffee shops across London and Cornwall and employ the current World Coffee in Good Spirits champion and UK Cup Tasters champion. We are an aspirational business and sit proudly at the forefront of the UK coffee scene.

Origin are now looking to employ a new Head of Retail to manage, organise, direct and lead the retail development of the business. The candidate will be based out of our new cafe and training centre in Scoresby Street, Southwark and will work closely with Head of Coffee and Head of Wholesale to ensure continued success of the brand.

Roles & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Take management responsibility for all existing retail sites including our cafes in Shoreditch, Southwark, Kings Cross St Pancras and Hammersmith.
  • The key responsibilities will be to drive sales revenue and manage margin requirements in existing sites.
  • Take management responsibility for all new retail opportunities, and to be pro-active in securing new retail opportunities, utilising popup, and semi-permanent espresso outlets across the city.

Requirements

  • Take responsibility for the integrity of the speciality coffee offer across all sites working with General Managers (GMs) and Head Baristas.
  • Immediate line management responsibility for all existing staff in regards rota management, holiday approval, daily operational concerns and staff housekeeping.
  • Achievement of sales growth targets in individual retail sites in line with company approved financial forecasts, budgets and P&L.
  • Achievement of GP% and operating costs in line with profit forecasts and annual budgets.
  • Support to GM’s in recruitment and interviewing of new baristas including processes for introduction into business.
  • Working with the senior management team to lead on the development and introduction of new products for retail.
  • Management of relationships with retail suppliers to ensure quality, provenance and best value.
  • Achievement of new business targets in retail [including expansion of popup espresso bars for new markets, corporate, business, events, etc]
  • To manage the relationships, leases and tenures with landlords as applicable, including the Head of Commercial Services at The British Library.

Personal skills and qualifications:

  • SCA Intermediate (or above) in either Barista, Brewing, Green Coffee or Sensory
  • Minimum 5-years-experience in the Specialty Coffee Sector with a reputable business
  • Management experience
