We are looking for a passionate and experienced Head Roaster to join us in achieving our ambitious growth objectives moving into 2024. You will lead on all thing’s coffee, working closely with our production manager and wholesale team and reporting directly into the senior management team.

The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive professional background that demonstrates an exceptional working knowledge of the specialty coffee industry and roastery management, independently balancing time and workloads to meet targets, product consistency and quality goals.

This is a multi-faceted role in a fast-growing coffee company with a core social mission, and this role is key to helping Old Spike continue to have a positive social and environmental impact and to meet the demands of our ambitious growth goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Roasting Expertise: Lead on all aspects of the roasting process, ensuring the highest quality and consistency in our coffee products. Manage the roasting schedules, profiles, and techniques to achieve optimal flavour profiles.

Team Leadership: Supervise the production team, provide guidance, training and foster a culture of continuous improvement. Coordinate and collaborate with various departments to meet production demands.

Quality Control: Build and maintain green coffee relationships with farmers /importers in order to maintain quality and guarantee excellence and consistency for our coffee.

Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and calibration of all roastery equipment to ensure optimal functionality.

Regulatory Compliance: Implement and maintain health and safety regulations within the roastery and ensure we are meeting all requirements.

Inventory & Budget Management: Manage green inventory levels, forecasting and budgets to ensure we are meeting volume, quality and financial targets.

Coffee Education: Lead on coffee education within the company and work alongside internal and external teams to provide resource and support where required. Conduct regular cuppings and engage the broader Old Spike team.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in specialty coffee roasting alongside demonstrating working and managing a team.
  • In-depth knowledge of roasting techniques, equipment, and green coffee sourcing
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and guide a team towards common goals.
  • Excellent sensory skills and the ability to evaluate and differentiate coffee characteristics.
  • Proficiency in inventory management, budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities with excellent communication and collaboration skills.
