Just beyond the sprawl of New York City where the first hints of the Wisconsin Glacier's imprint on the Empire state’s landscape can be seen and felt, Plowshares Coffee Roasters makes it home nestled in the foothills of the Ramapo Valley. Plowshares Coffee blossomed from a lifelong fascination with coffee. It is the byproduct of unbridled passion in the endless pursuit of the perfect cup. This same passion is demonstrated in our unfailing commitment to the craft, the producers, and to all those who appreciate the beauty and complexity of a superior cup of coffee. At Plowshares, we take a true artisan approach to roasting our coffees. We sample roast countless numbers of coffees on an ongoing basis in search of the best beans with a preference for organic and fair trade coffees. Once we find the coffees we are interested in selling, we explore different roast profiles to determine the optimal roast that best suits the unique character of each coffee and brings out its special flavor characteristics. We like to keep things small and simple in order to maintain a consistently high level of quality. We are a true roast to order business which means that we don't roast ahead of time, rather we roast your coffee the day we recieve your order. Once your coffee is roasted, we immediately package it and send it on it's way the very next day. All of our coffees are roasted in small batches never exceeding 30 lbs. Roasting in small batches give us better control over the roasting process and helps us guarantee that once we find the optimal roast profile for a specific bean we can replicate the process over and over. Our coffees are all roasted in a lovingly restored 1950's era vintage German Probat UG 15 roaster which, until recently, was producing beautiful coffees for over 50 years in a small cafe in Belgium. Plowshare's mission is deeply rooted in the spirit of social responsibility and strives to create a sustainable and transparent business model. To the coffee farmers and producers we feel a deep responsibility not only in compensating them fairly for the fruits of their labor, but also a responsibility to help their crops reach the fullest potential in terms of quality. To our customers we have the responsibility of sharing our business practices so our patrons know the coffee they purchase is not only ethically sourced, but also grown and processed using good land stewardship principles. Our customers should also know that Plowshares is continuously searching for ways to reduce our own carbon footprint through diligent recycling, purchasing alternative energy credits and continuously evaluating how our products are packaged and shipped. Plowshares Roastery is powered by 100% Wind Power and we partnered with the CarbonFund.org at the inception of our business to ensure we were a carbon nuetral business from day one.
