Common Ground is a relaxed neighbourhood coffee shop and eatery in Stroud Green near Finsbury Park. We serve a small menu of antipodean inspired restaurant quality brunch food and Dark Arts coffee. We also produce our own fermented soda (water kefir) which we sell in-house and are now turning into a separate business. The cafe space is unique, vibrant and creative with a welcoming back terrace.

Since opening in February 2018 Common Ground has rapidly grown in popularity meaning we get very busy, particularly at weekends when brunch is in high demand. We are now entering a new exciting phase where we plan to expand the profile and reputation of our food offering and be part of the movement to add colour to and help redefine the London café scene. Menu development is led by the owner but, as Kitchen Team Leader/Chef you will play a key role in this process.

Common Ground is looking for full-time energetic and experienced Kitchen Team Leader/Chef to join our friendly team.

The Kitchen manager/Chef (reporting to the General Manager) will:

  • Take responsibility for the smooth running of the busy kitchen
  • Be passionate about the quality and presentation of food and able to ensure consistently high standards
  • Lead, manage, review performance of and develop the small kitchen team
  • Oversee kitchen related rotas, staff hours, holiday phasing, managing punctuality and smooth operation
  • Collaborate with the owner (who leads on menu development) to deliver new menu items
  • Take responsibility for kitchen related stock control, ordering and deliveries
  • Responsible for all aspects of kitchen related Health and Safety and food hygiene
  • Ensure daily food hygiene checks and cleaning rotas are in place and respected
  • Improve and manage GP, cost control, supplier terms and wastage
  • Work closely with the General Manager to constantly review and improve service standards and customer experience

Our ideal Kitchen Manager/Chef will have:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in a similar environment and 1 year in a similar role
  • Understanding (and preferably experience of) high quality Aussie brunch style food
  • Be a strong team player and role model for the kitchen team and link between the FOH and kitchen team
  • Knowledge of food safety and hygiene regulations (minimum Level 2)
  • Be a confident team leader, able to stay calm and maintain high customer service standards under pressure and ensure the kitchen team carry out their roles
  • Has a positive mindset (negative people don’t get on too well here!) and contributes to positive and friendly team atmosphere
  • We are open 7 days a week with Saturdays and Sundays being our busiest days so the Kitchen Manager/Chef will work most weekends with days off mid-week. However no evening work is required.
