Job Title: Barista, New London Architecture (NLA) at Coal Drops Yard
Reports to: Head Barista and Supervisor
Salary: Hourly rate, £11 per hour
Contract: Fixed term. Min. 35 hours per week. June 28th until end of September, 2021
New London Architecture (NLA) is London’s centre for excellence for the built environment.
Our purpose is to make London a better place for those who live, work and visit.
We do this through a busy year-round programme of research, events, festivals, exhibitions, publications, promoting debate and discussion about the future of cities.
NLA at Coal Drops Yard provides access for professionals, the public and young people, helping to inform good decision-making and inspiring young people to engage with the built environment.
The Barista will assist the Head Barista and Supervisor in serving and managing an excellent coffee offer as part of NLA at Coal Drops Yard.
The role will support the wider NLA events and venues team with creating the feel of an independent coffee shop as part of NLA to bring people together to shape a better city. The role is also tasked with assisting with a range of private events in the space.
This role is ideal for a highly skilled barista with an unwavering passion for coffee. An added advantage is an interest in architecture and the built environment. The successful candidate will have initiative, will be a great communicator who possesses strong customer service skills and a creative approach to problem solving with the ability to work on several complex tasks simultaneously whilst remaining calm under pressure.
• Producing and serving espresso-based coffee whilst maintaining a very high level of customer service • Operating, cleaning and maintenance of the onsite coffee machine and grinder • Upkeep of front of house area alongside the gallery assistant to maintain an excellent standard of appearance • Operate all aspects of the till including card transactions • Opening and closing the space when needed • Reporting any maintenance issues to Head Barista and Supervisor • Ensuring all health and safety measures are taken to guarantee the safety of staff and visitors • Assisting with public and private events (may involve some out of opening hours)
What we are looking for
Essential Skills & Abilities:
• Proven ability to produce high quality espresso-based coffee • Clear and effective communication skills, both oral and written • Proven ability to provide excellent customer service • Working knowledge of and passion for coffee production • Ability to follow tasks through to completion • The ability to prioritise effectively • A flexible approach in terms of work, changes and participation • Good team player with the ability to take initiative; a self‐starter • Willing to work early mornings, evenings and weekends, as required (overtime paid by the hour)
